Spraying water regularly on areas where ants are seen will disturb their activities. Ants have certain scents that they leave on their trail which is picked up by following ants. This is how ants are able to follow a certain path while carrying food home to their ant hills. If you have noticed carefully, you would notice that most of the ant hills are built on crack areas where it is mostly dry and that their ant hills will almost always consist of some sands. Use your garden hose and spray water on your garden areas mercilessly to destroy their activities. Alternately, you can pour boiling hot water on the ant hills which will kill the ants instantly. Try it and see for yourself.
